JAPAN SHOWS INTEREST IN PANAMA’S MEGA INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS

Panama continues to attract the attention of international investors. The Japan Business Federation (Keidanren), an organization that represents leading Japanese corporations, has expressed interest in participating in the financing and development of some of the country’s most important infrastructure megaprojects.

Strategic Initiatives and Panama infrastructure updates

During a meeting with President José Raúl Mulino, the Japanese delegation expressed interest in strategic initiatives such as the Río Indio multipurpose reservoir, the interoceanic gas pipeline, the development of new ports, the extension of Metro Line 3 to Costa Verde, the future Panama Metro Line 2A, and the modernization of the Cerro Patacón landfill. These projects represent billions of dollars in investments aimed at expanding Panama’s logistics, energy, and transportation capacity.

Leading Japanese Corporations Explore Strategic Cooperation

The meeting also opened discussions to promote an Economic Partnership Agreement between Panama and Japan, with the goal of strengthening trade cooperation and facilitating the arrival of new Japanese investments in strategic sectors.

Among the companies represented in the delegation were globally recognized corporations such as Mitsubishi, Mitsui, Sumitomo, Itochu, Sojitz, MUFG Bank, and Panasonic, reflecting the interest of Japan’s private sector in participating in the next stage of Panama’s infrastructure development.

The engagement with Keidanren strengthens Panama’s international positioning as a destination for major investments, supported by long-term infrastructure projects and its strategic role in regional trade and logistics.
